Dear Class,
I wanted to highlight an important concept that Feldman (2019) discussed in the text concerning the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Emerging adulthood is a concept that was coined in the 21st century concerning the prolonged road to adulthood and the distinct characteristics that young adults experience during that time.
Emerging adulthood occurs roughly between the ages 18-26. It is a time of life according the theorist Arnett when individuals are no longer minors but are not quite yet fully adult. Emerging adults are still experimenting with identity, experiencing instability in their life, focused on self, and feeling optimistic. Due to the rapid change, emerging adults feel in-between their childhoods and achieving what they want from life as adults.
What do you think? Where does the line between and adulthood lie? What do you think are some of the markers that ones adolescence has ended? Is it more than just a number (e.g. the age of majority, or being able to vote or consume alcohol legally)? Why might it be important to think of this time period in life uniquely and differently from either adolescence and adulthood?
